Ultrasound bootcamp
Target audience
This will be an introductory course designed for medical school faculty interested in integrating ultrasound education at the undergraduate level. The course will focus on innovative ways of integrating ultrasound education during the pre-clerkship and clerkship years, and provide learners with the basic tools about developing a Longitudinal Curriculum to accomplish that goal. The session will include didactic lectures, and hands-on image capture skills using standardized patients to help simulate actual teaching sessions.

Instructional and performance objectives

Develop the necessary skills to help integrate ultrasound into the Gross Anatomy course

Develop techniques to assess student competencies in the pre-clerkship years

Demonstrate image capture skills to teach basic ultrasound skills to novice users

Become familiar with the user interface of an ultrasound system, and demonstrate a basic understanding of the knobs to help optimize image quality

Discuss the importance of ultrasound safety as it relates to the ALARA principle

Describe ways of integrating ultrasound during the clerkship years and how to implement educational sessions to accomplish educational objectives

Demonstrate basic image capture skills for core POCUS applications including the FAST, RUQ, AAA, DVT, Lung, Ocular, OB, Abdominal and MSK.

Discuss other innovative ways of teaching medical students including the case-based approach to teaching, flipped classroom model and asynchronous learning.

Discuss challenges associated with curriculum implementation at the undergraduate level
The course will be limited to 24 learners to allow for an ideal Learner to Instructor ratio.
